A city with a pedigree, Istanbul was at different times in her history the capital city of the Roman, Byzantine, Latin and Ottoman empires. It now boasts the remains of those societies, from grand mosques, ancient neighborhoods and a fascinating bazaar to a small but strong Jewish community that has remained vibrant throughout the centuries. Continue on to Israel, to see and hear, explore and learn about the land that is home to Jews, Arabs and Christians, a place of modern traditions and ancient customs.

The museum was opened in 2001, and your visit will include a dialogue with a museum specialist.
  • Walk in one of the first Jewish neighborhoods in Istanbul, the Balat, and visit the Ahrida Synagogue, founded by Jews from modern-day Macedonia who were escaping Ottoman Empire oppression. False messiah Sabbatai Tzvi, founder of the 17th century Jewish Sabbatean movement, prayed there.
