Day Two: Wednesday, January 21, 2015
ARRIVAL

  • Individual arrivals at Ben Gurion International Airport.
  • Transfer on own to Tel Aviv and check into the hotel.
  • Meet in the lobby for introduction and orientation.
  • The Reform Movement is Cutting Edge: Depart the hotel and join Rabbi Gilad Kariv for a dialogue with members of the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism's (IMPJ) pre-army academy (mechina), a special social justice project in Jaffa, including an in-depth look at the innovative power and transformative potential of the Reform Movement in Israel.
  • Return to the hotel.
  • Enjoy a Middle-Eastern-style dinner at Maganda, in Tel Aviv's Yemenite Quarter, with a varied menu of traditional salads and grilled meats.

Day Three: Thursday, January 22, 2015
TEL AVIV: THE FIRST HEBREW CITY

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • People to People: Morning Tefillah and meeting with Maram members at Mishkenot Ruth Daniel in Jaffe.
  • Strangers in a Strange Land: Explore the reality of the foreign worker in Tel Aviv as you walk through the streets of south Tel Aviv with Sigal Rozen, public policy coordinator of the Hotline for Migrant Workers.
  • LaDa'at Ethnic Tasting Tour through Tel Aviv's famous Levinsky Market, where you'll find a combination of foods and sweets from all over the Mediterranean and hear the unique stories of the individuals who sell them.
  • Israel Goes Green: Visit the Sharon (Hiriya) Recycling Park, a unique ecological project transforming a garbage disposal center into one of Israel's largest parks.
  • Drive to the town of Gadera and meet with Friends by Nature, a community empowerment helping Ethiopian Israeli youth and families and visit their community garden.
  • Return to Tel Aviv.
  • Dinner on own.

Day Four: Friday, January 23, 2015
FUTURE VISION, PAST FOUNDATION

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Check out of the hotel.
  • Drive to the Gush Etzion area.
  • Visit Daoud Nassar of the Tent of Nations, located on the fence between Gush Etzion and Area A. It is his mission to build bridges between people, and between people to the land.
  • The Identity of the Israeli Settlement: Meet with Shani Abrams Simkovitz from the Gush Etzion Foundation.
  • Ascend to Jerusalem.
  • LaDa'at The Geopolitics of Jerusalem: Travel through the city of Jerusalem, exploring some of its political and diplomatic complexities - including the ‘Security Barrier' - to gain a behind-the-headlines insight into current developments.
  • Stop at the Haas Promenade for an overlook of the Old and New City of Jerusalem and the traditional “shehechiyanu” blessing.
  • Lunch on your own, en route.
  • A multi-cultural tasting journey through the hustle and bustle of Jerusalem's Machaneh Yehudah open-air market: Enjoy the sights, smells, tastes and sounds of this vibrant area where Jerusalemites shops.
  • Check into the hotel with time to relax and prepare for Shabbat.
  • Depart in small groups to various Reform Synagogues in and around Jerusalem for Kabbalat Shabbat service.
  • Home hospitality Shabbat dinner/communal Shabbat dinner with local congregants/leadership at various communities (in small groups).

Day Five: Saturday, January 24, 2015 
SHABBAT PERSPECTIVES

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Shabbat morning service at Hebrew Union College with students, followed by lunch and Shabbat conversation with Rabbi Michael Marmur and Rabbi Naama Kelman.
  • LaDa'at Hebrew Writers: Old Voices and New Perspectives: Guided walk through the streets of Jerusalem, using the writings of Jerusalem's poets and authors, such as Yehuda Amichai, S.Y. Agnon and others.
  • Return to the hotel.
  • Israel Democracy 2015: Dialogue with journalist, Noga Tarnopolsky, a correspondent to the Global Post about the upcoming elections.
  • The Nationality Resolution and Its Effect on The Israeli Democracy: Dialogue with Prof. Reuven Hazan of the Political Science Department at Hebrew University.
  • Dinner on own in Jerusalem.

Day Six: Sunday, January 25, 2015
CHALLENGES IN THE SOUTH

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Meet with Dr. Tali Levanon, Director of Israel's Trauma Coalition (ITC).
  • Depart Jerusalem for the South.
  • Living on the Edge #1: Visit Moshav Netiv Ha'asarah, located on Israel's border with the Gaza Strip, for an insight into the security complexities of Israel's withdrawal from Gaza while trying to create a thriving home, including a dialogue with a resident.
  • 21st Century Israeli Pioneers: Meet members of the local, newly-opened Ayalim Association Center which encourages students & young families to live on Moshavim and in small communities around Israel.
  • Living on the Edge #2: Meet with Rabbi Yael Karrie at Kehilat Sha'ar Hanegev and with Alon Schuster, Head of the regional council.
  • Return to Jerusalem and to the hotel.
  • Dinner on own.

Day Seven: Monday, January 26, 2015
THROUGH THE JORDAN VALLEY

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Check out of the hotel.
  • Visit the Yad BeYad (Hand in Hand) Bilingual School, dedicated to bringing together Jewish and Arab children in a positive and natural learning environment. The school was the target of a “Tag Mechir” attack last month.
  • Challenges and Triumphs of Religious Pluralism and Social Justice in Israel: Dialogue with Anat Hoffman, Executive Director of the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC).
  • Drive northwards along the Jordan Valley, part of the enormous Syrian-African Rift.
  • Lunch on your own, en route.
  • Visit Bio-Bee Biological Systems on Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu, leading experts in the mass production of beneficial insects and mites for agricultural purposes. There is regional cooperation in this field with Palestinians and Jordanians.
  • Continue to the kibbutz hotel in the Upper Galilee for check-in.
  • Tour of the hotel.
  • Dinner at the hotel.
  • Kibbutz Ideology and Israeli Reality in the 21st Century: Meet with a second-generation kibbutz member.

Day Eight: Tuesday, January 27, 2015
COMMUNITIES PAST AND PRESENT

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Check out of the hotel.
  • The panoramic views from Mt. Bental (overlooking the abandoned Syrian town of Kuneitra) give sharp insights into Israel's security situation on the Golan Heights, and the enormous challenges it faced in the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
  • Israel and the Civil War in Syria: Dialogue with Maj. (Ret.) Sarit Zehavi, former officer of the IDF intelligence Corps and resident of the Upper Galilee.  
  • Guided visit of the village of Peki'in, home to Muslims, Christians, Druze and - until recently - the remnants of an ancient Jewish community. Tradition identifies a small local cave as the refuge of the 2nd-century Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, supposed author of the Zohar, the book of Jewish mysticism.
  • Guided visit to Zichron Ya'acov, one of the first communities established by the early Zionist pioneers, including:
    • A walk along the colorful Pedestrian Mall with lunch on own.
    • A walk through the glorious Ramat Hanadiv Gardens, dedicated to Baron de Rothschild (the “Nadiv” or “Benefactor”), located on the outskirts of Zichron Ya'acov.
  • Festive farewell dinner at a local winery.
  • Transfer to Ben Gurion Airport.
  • Departure flight to the U.S.A., arriving the following day (January 28th).
