Mount Carmel

Located in Israel's northern region, the Carmel Mountain Range has long since been regarded as the "Europe of Israel". With its fertile vegetation, breathtaking landscape and moderate climate, Mount Carmel is one of Israel's most oft visited sites and arguably the country's favorite forest areas.

Uniquely combining nature and city life, the slopes of Mount Carmel are a destination not to be missed by anyone on a tour to Israel. With the city of Haifa—the "capital of the north"—and the artsy town of Zikhron Ya'aqov rested on its slope, set against acres of lush forestry, vineyards and olive gardens, the Carmel Mount Range has something for everyone; city dwellers and nature lovers alike.

And if nature or urban landscapes are less appealing to your senses, Mount Carmel offers historical sights in abundance. The range's longstanding history runs the gamut between archeological findings from early human life approximately one million years old, to excavations of caves and grottos in which, according to the Book of Kings, the prophet Elijah resided.

Mount Carmel's historic association to Elijah the prophet has determined the mountain range sacred to the Jewish people. Various Jewish denominations await the return of the Elijah as a sign indicating the arrival of the Messiah. It is believed that many of Elijah's prophetic activities (such as the raising of the dead, the bringing of fire from the sky to the earth, etc.) were performed on Mount Carmel.

Mount Carmel's blend of urbanity, nature, history and religion makes it an attractive destination whether on a family tour to Israel, a private tour to Israel, a Jewish heritage tour or a Bar Mitzvah tour.

Religion on Mount Carmel

Beyond the significance of Mount Carmel to Jews, this region bares religious meaning to two other faiths.

Following the legend of the Biblical prophet Elijah, several Catholic denominations have made Elijah the mainstake of their religion. One such sect, the Carmelites, originated in England around the 12 th century, and arrived in Palestine as Crusaders. They settled atop Mount Carmel, building a monastery on the ruins of what is believed to have been the dwelling place of Elijah. The Carmelite monastery is still in existence today, run and operated by the Carmelites and open to visitors year round.

Another religious order that calls Mount Carmel its sacred home is the Bahai faith, who has built its center of operation in a beautifully groomed garden atop the mountain range.

Originating in Persia circa the 19 th century, the Bahai faith is centered around Mirza Husayn Ali Nuri, believed by members of the faith to be a messenger of God, of the same order as Jesus, Abraham, Muhammad and Buddha.

The Bahai World Center serves as the administrative headquarters of the Bahai faith, and is located on the Carmel Mountain directly atop the Haifa seaport. The center was built in its current location in memory of the faith's spiritual leader, Ali Nuri, who was penalized by the Ottoman's during their rule over Palestine and sent to live in isolation in the Carmel region.

The Bahai World Center's grounds are nothing short of spectacular and are a must-see destination when on an Israel tour.

Mount Carmel - Biking and Nature Tours

Much has been said and written about the beauty of the Carmel Mountain Range. The region's mild climate and abundance of shade makes it a perfect location for a relaxing nature tour, even during the hot summer months. Whether opting for a rigorous bike ride, a hike or a relaxing stroll through one of the Carmel's many trails, you will not be disappointed with its scenery. Whatever your preference, the Carmel Mountain Range is able to accommodate your needs.

A breathtaking panoramic view of the hillside rolling down into the Haifa seaport can be seen from virtually any post atop the Carmel. For bird lovers, the Carmel offers excellent bird watching opportunities as the forestry brings flocks of feathered animals to the area.

It has often been said that, even if you are not a nature lover, the Carmel brings out the nature lover in you. When on a tour to Israel, go ahead and give it a try.
